Remember the day you bought and decorated your
Christmas tree? Ornaments and bitsy bulbs added whimsy to your living
room. Oh, and the sweet smell of pine! That was a good day. But now it’s January and we have to pack up the
tinsel. Luckily, for those of us still yearning for a bit more cheer (and
practicality), there’s one more event of the holiday season that should not be
missed: MulchFest 2012! It’s a great family activity with an eco-friendly
angle, no matter where you live. —
This Saturday and Sunday, from 10am to 2pm, bring your de-robed fir to a chipping or
drop-off location near you. Kiddos will adore watching their tree get sucked
into the mulching machine (trust us) and shoot out into tiny pieces. As a
souvenir, everyone can take home a bag of mulch to use in their backyard come
springtime or to make a winter bed for a street tree. Looking to make it even
more B.Y.O.? Sport a bag and fill it to the brim.
Last year, over 17,000 trees were recycled. We have
a good feeling about this year. You too?
A Few Final Tips:
*Not all of the sites offer chipping services. Some
are only drop-off locations (but for practical and time-saving options, those venues
are available from now until January 8th)—just be sure to go to a CHIPPING site
if you want the full experience.
*Remove all lights and décor before heading
outdoors.
*MulchFest
is also looking for volunteers! Find out how to get involved.
