The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is an iconic New York City tradition that never fails to delight spectators of all ages. Whether you’re planning to watch at home on TV or brave the crowds and bring the whole family to watch in the streets, we have essential tips for making the most of the experience.
The Night Before
It’s a Thanksgiving Eve tradition to watch the iconic balloons come to life! The balloon inflation begins at 3pm and ends at 10pm on Wednesday, November 25. The viewing area is at 77th Street and 81st Street between Central Park West and Columbus Avenue.
Note: There is no public viewing north of 81st Street.
Where to Watch
There are 2.5 miles of public viewing. If you want to see it up close, you are going to have to get up early! The early risers camp out starts at 6am on the west side of Central Park West from 59th to 75th Street. Kick-off is at 9am at 77th Street and Central Park West. Some good views are when the parade turns at Columbus Circle onto Central Park South and from 59th to 38th Street once it goes south onto 6th Avenue. The Shops at Columbus Circle will be open and has a great view. If you prefer to watch from home, the parade is broadcast nationally on NBC from 9am-12pm.
Note: Avoid 6th between 34th-38th Streets and Macy’s in Herald Square: Viewing is limited by the national television broadcast. The procession’s final stop is in front of Macy’s in Herald Square.
Balloon Lineup
There will be 17 giant character balloons that are instantly recognizable, like Hello Kitty, the Pillsbury Doughboy, Spongebob Squarepants, Pikachu, Snoopy and Woodstock, and Thomas the Tank Engine. “Ice Age’s” Scrat and his acorn are making their debut this year! There are also seven novelty balloons, including Harold the Fireman and Wiggleworm, plus Macy’s ornament balloons like the world’s largest baseball signed by R.H. Macy, the Nutcracker, and the Macy’s Candy Cane. And finally, there are two balloonicles—a combination of a cold-air balloon and a vehicle—the Kool Aid Man and the Aflac Duck.
Performances
The parade is a star studded event. Joining the festivities this year are Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo, Mariah Carey, Daughtry, Andy Grammer, Panic! At the Disco, Plain White Ts, Train, Prince Royce, Trey Songz, Jordin Sparks, and more! There will also be performances by Cirque du Soleil, dance groups, jump-ropers, stilt dancers, and cheerleaders.
