American Ballet Theatre's "The Nutcracker" at BAM
Families with children ages 4 and up shouldn’t miss the American Theatre Ballet’s production of Tchaikovsky’s "The Nutcracker." Choreographed by Alexei Ratmansky, this will be the final engagement ever of this production’s five-year run in NYC. Led by Misty Copeland and a cast of more than 100 dancers, the classic tale of Clara’s journey to the Land of the Sugar Plum Fairy will feature a spectacular growing Christmas tree, toy soldiers, snow, and much more. Manhattan Youth Ballet's "The Knickerbocker Suite" at The Manhattan Movement and Arts Center
Rose Caiola and the Manhattan Youth Ballet present a new take on a holiday classic featuring the iconic New York City landmarks such as The Statue of Liberty, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and more. Classic Nutcracker scenes like “The Land of the Snow” are transformed into a snowy frenzy of shoppers dancing in and out of stores like Macy’s and Bloomingdales. (Opens Friday) -
Unsilent Night
For the 23rd annual Unsilent Night, composer Phil Kline will lead a chorus of boomboxes from the Washington Square Arch to Tompkins Square Park. Unsilent Night is a participatory musical piece– each participant receives one of four musical tracks via CD or Mp3, and together, the sounds of all four tracks form the “Unsilent Night” composition. Some boom boxes will be provided; participants are strongly encouraged to bring their own source of sound–any type of speaker will do. (Saturday) -
PUSH Physical Theatre at Symphony Space
PUSH Physical Theatre is coming to Symphony Space! This innovative theater troupe specializes in acrobatic and theatrical storytelling for all ages. Their performances have been compared to a cross “between fine sculpture and the hit movie ‘The Matrix,’” as they challenge the boundaries of conventional theater with their physical, gravity-defying performances.
