Trick-or-Streets in NYC Back for a Second Year

Adorable Barbies, little mermaids and everyone in between can trick or treat safely through the streets of New York City this year.

Trick-Or-Streets is back for its second year, and this year, it’s expanding to all five boroughs. In the lead up to and on the day of Halloween, the city will activate Open Streets, plazas and other corridors to celebrate the holiday and expand access to safe pedestrian spaces.

Mayor Eric Adams said after the original iteration of Trick-or-Streets was a hit last year, his administration is excited to bring the event back this year to ensure a safe Halloween for all.

“Our administration has been relentless in our efforts to be creative in maximizing and utilizing the city’s public space, allowing communities to come together in ways they never could before,” Mayor Adams said in a statement. “We encourage anyone interested in hosting a ‘Trick-or-Streets’ event to apply to join the program, and we look forward to working with you to deliver the safest and most fun Halloween the city has ever seen.”

In addition to providing safe streets for trick-or-treating on Halloween, this year, for the first time ever, the Department of Transportation is producing events at Open Streets and plazas across all five boroughs.

Programming will include performances, festive activities, expanded space for trick-or-treating and more. Keep an eye on the official Trick-or-Streets page for the full list of Premier Events.

Open Streets programs have had impacts on the city beyond Halloween.

Open Streets has led to many great programs, ranging from the transitioning of temporary open spaces to permanent plazas, to bike boulevards, and now to the annual Halloween tradition of ‘Trick-or-Streets,'” Department of Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez said in a statement. “This event gives New Yorkers the opportunity to safely enjoy the holiday along a wide variety of safer, shared community spaces, and I wish all of New York’s ghouls and goblins a wonderful and safe night of tricks and treats!”

Psst… Check out these Halloween books for all ages!
