Editor’s Pick: I’m going to make a few assumptions and take a few short-cuts because what I mostly want to accomplish is to let you know about an event this Thursday night, June 16, at the 92Y, that I’m sure will offer a lot of insight and inspiration for any parent concerned about work-life balance and living a life that’s true to their values.
My assumptions are that you know the challenges I’m talking about because you live them, and you’re not at all sure what to do about them because it’s hard to put all the pieces together: A job that pays that doesn’t kill; a spouse who is truly supportive; time for parenting, time for partnering, and time for sleep and exercise and fun.
Which brings me to Thursday night’s event with Joan Barnes. Joan is one of the great entrepreneurs of in the world of children’s enrichment and activities. She was the mom who founded Gymboree and grew it into a mega-franchise business. At the same time, her outsized success collided with personal values and priorities, and set up her off on a personal journey to reclaim a life more to her liking—and, now, years later, she has shared her story in a new book called Play It Forward: From Gymboree to the Yoga Mat and Beyond.
On Thursday night, from 7-8:30 pm, Joan will be leading a chat at the 92Y about work-live life values and entrepreneurism, joined by other women we love including Peggy Northrop, the former editor of More and who now runs co-founder of Shebooks.net, and Renee Sullivan, the founder of The Moms Groups, and a regular contributor to New York Family.
