Family Activities For Women’s History Month 2015

March is Women’s History Month! Celebrate the achievements and contributions of women throughout history with these fun and educational events and activities.

Women in American History at the New-York Historical Society

Children and parents will have a unique opportunity to get up close and personal with artifacts from the Gilder Lehraman Collection. Beth Huffer, Curator of Books and Manuscripts, will lead conversations related to women’s important roles in the history, highlighting artifacts from the American Revolution through World War II and treasures relating to Lucy Knox, Mary Walker, and Susan B. Anthony. Women’s History Month at the Intrepid Sea, Air, and Space Museum

Tour Guide Talk: Intrepid Women: Extraordinary Stories of Women in Sea, Air, and Space 
Through March 29
Saturdays and Sundays at 1pm

This 45-minute guided tour at the Intrepid Museum recounts the extraordinary stories of women in air, sea, and space, from female Airforce Service Pilots to Sally Ride in space. Free with museum admission; recommended for ages 6 and up.

Tour Guide Talk: Rosie the Riveter
Through March 29
Saturdays and Sundays at 11:45am and 2:45pm

This interactive talk will celebrate the WWII icon Rosie the Riveter and the “We Can Do It” attitude she represents. The talk will cover Rosie’s history and how this icon helped shape the lives  of women in the workplace through the present day. Free with museum admission; recommended for ages 6 and up.

“What Will You Be Today?” Women’s History Month Festival at CMOM
March 21-22
Saturday and Sunday, 10am

Join CMOM for a weekend of storytelling, design workshops, and interactive activities in a celebratory exploration of women’s empowerment, creativity, and talent. Free with museum admission. 212 West 83rd Street, cmom.org

“Accomplished Women” Exhibit at the Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum
Through June 21
Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 12-4pm

Visit the  Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum to see the exhibit “Accomplished Women: Schoolgirl Art from Female Academies in the Early Nineteenth Century,” which highlights the needlework and watercolor creations of female students from private academies during the 1790s, when these schools were beginning to open in major cities around the country. A selection of 12 beautiful and rare works from a major private collection are on view, including a mourning embroidery by Abigail Walker—part of Bartow-Pell’s permanent collection. Take older kids to check out the Brooklyn Museum’s Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art, devoted to “raising awareness of feminism’s cultural contributions” and educating “new generations about the meaning of feminist art.” The Center’s long-term installation, “The Dinner Party” by Judy Chicago, is a ceremonial banquet table featuring 39 place settings honoring important women throughout history. Free with museum admission. 200 Eastern Parkway, Brooklyn, brooklynmuseum.org

Treehouse Shakers

<div>Treehouse Shakers’ Branching OUT After-School program is for ages 12-14. This awarded program is for young people who identify as LGBTQIA+, or are seeking to become better allies. Branching OUT centers on discovering and exploring one’s story and identity through an intentionally artist-led format. During our community-based program, young people will explore and reflect on their own story to create a larger, more meaningful experience, while gaining self-empowerment and gathering with like-minded peers. Through the guidance of our awarded teaching artists, young people will create narratives that will be turned into podcasts, dances, songs or poetry. </div> <div> </div> <div>Young people have the opportunity to learn new art forms, work with professional artists, while building a meaningful community.</div>
