‘African’ folktales

Despite the proliferation of 3-D movies and virtual games, nothing beats the simple pleasures of shadow puppetry.

This month, one of the masters of the form, the Shadow Box Theatre, brings “The African Drum” to the Hostos Center for Arts and Culture. From Feb. 8-10, Shadow Box presents this hour-long show featuring three folktales set to the beat of African rhythms and told by a storyteller, cast of performers, and, of course, See-More, the theater’s mascot puppet. Recommended for kids ranging from early childhood to 5th grade.

“The African Drum” at the Hostos Center for Arts and Culture [450 Grand Concourse at 149th Street in Grand Concourse, (718) 518-4455], Feb. 8, 9 and 10 at 10 am and 11:30 am. Tickets $15 ($20 at the door). For info, visit www.shadowboxtheatre.org or call (212) 724-0677.
