The Taylor Swift Experience is coming to New York City! After an overwhelming response to it’s debut in Los Angeles in 2014, the Grammy Museum’s most popular exhibit is opening in New York’s Seaport District in Lower Manhattan this fall.
“It is a celebration of this amazing artist. Everything that goes into making her an American icon,” said Phillip St. Pierre, Senior General Manager of the South Street Seaport. “There will be lyrics, costumes, songs, and inspirations, all kinds of different exhibits to give you some insight into Taylor Swift and what drives her.”
New York’s Seaport District is the storied neighborhood in Lower Manhattan being revitalized by The Howard Hughes Corporation. It has partnered with the Grammy Museum to host this exhibit. Visitors and fans will get an in-depth look at the 10-time Grammy winner through Taylor’s personal photographs and home videos, interactive experiences, handwritten lyrics of her top-charting hits, and iconic performance outfits.
“We are here to bring the Seaport back to life. So, bringing Taylor Swift here was an easy decision for us,” Pierre said. “We got this amazing influx of restaurants, retail, fashion, arts, and creativity, all this excitement is coming to Lower Manhattan.” Just recently, the globally acclaimed Italian concept store brand, 10 Corso Como, has announced to launch their first North American branch at the Seaport District.
Taylor Swift was named New York City’s newest ambassador for tourism in October of 2014. Nwaka Onwusa, curator at the Grammy Museum, says it is an exciting opportunity to have the exhibit debut in Los Angeles and now travel to New York’s historical and cultural district, where the Seaport represents innovation and creativity and that same vitality is mirrored in the Taylor Swift Experience.
There are some new items the public didn’t get to see in the LA exhibit, such as the iconic outfits from her “Bad Blood” music video and her never-before-seen pre-Met Gala Louis Vuitton dress. The exhibit will also showcase the one-of-a-kind custom-built piano used during The 1989 World Tour.
The Grammy Museum has had a long time relationship with Taylor Swift, as she loaned a pair of her cowboy boots and lyrics to her hit “Tim McGraw” in 2008, which has became the first artifact the Museum ever had, according to Onwusa.
“The Museum is about sharing stories about the power of music and its influence. Taylor Swift embodies that,” Onwusa said. “It is an exhibit we’ve wanted to do for a while and the timing was finally right for both the museum and Taylor Swift in making this exhibit a reality.”
Visitors will catch a glimpse into Taylor Swift’s musical journey while experiencing rare items and visual aids that can only be found in this latest exhibit. There is also rare home footage that would provide a more intimate look into Taylor Swift’s life and career.
“I think fans of Taylor Swift will be delighted. People that are only aware of her as an artist, but didn’t really know her that well will also gain insight into what motivates this artist,” Pierre says.
The Taylor Swift Experience will open on Friday, Nov. 18, 2016 and on display through Feb. 19, 2017. Tickets are $9 and can be purchased through Ticketmaster.
