Fleet Week 2016
Fleet Week is coming to New York City once again! Families are invited to support the nation’s Navy branches by watching various concerts, viewing parades of ships in the New York Harbor, or participating in Marine Day! Fleet Week Activities at the Intrepid Sea, Air, & Space Museum
Honor the servicemen and women who protect our country with a celebration of Fleet Week activities onboard one of New York’s most famous landmarks. Adults and kids will have a blast watching the parade of arriving ships on Wednesday, May 25, and catching a free screening of the ’90s classic “Top Gun” on Friday, May 27. Throughout the week, there will be 1950s, post-World War II musical performances, amazing demonstrations by Intrepid Museum educators, and more. All US military and veterans receive free admission and some of the events on the pier are free to the public. The week is capped off with a solemn Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 30. (Through Monday) -
Lower East Side Festival of the Arts
Celebrate the unique artistic and culture impact of the Lower East Side! ART KNOWS NO WALLS OR BARRIERS is this year’s theme, which is fitting as the LES blends together so many cultures to create beautiful art, dance, music and writing. There is something for everyone here, whether you’re an art buff, a theater devotee, or poetry expert. On Saturday, check out the free street fair and the special youth performances inside. (Friday-Sunday) -
Governors Island Opening Weekend and Family Fun Day
Governors Island will reopen for the season this Saturday! Hop on a ferry to explore the island’s parks and grounds, enjoy bike rides, have a picnic, play mini-golf, cool off in the sprinklers, and more. Plus, don’t forget to check out Family Fun Day in Nolan Park on Sunday. From 11am to 4pm, families with children of all ages can participate in arts and crafts, listen to storytellers, dance to the music of Tim Kubart and the Space Cadets, march in a parade with the Shinbone Alley Stilt Band, and much more. (Island opens Saturday; Family Fun Day Sunday) -
DanceAfrica Bazaar at BAM
Featuring over 150 representatives from all over the world, this show is more than just dance. See a variety of different fashions, foods and moves from African, Caribbean, and African-American cultures in one place. Local residents will see the space around BAM transformed into an international bazaar. (Saturday-Monday) -
"Crocs: Ancient Predators in a Modern World" Exhibit at AMNH
Visit the world-famous American Museum of Natural History for "Crocs: Ancient Predators in a Modern World," a special exhibit all about crocodilians (not just crocodiles!). The exhibit features live animals, including a Siamese crocodile and American alligator hatchlings. Discover what makes their biology special and how they have evolved over millions of years. (Opens Saturday) -
"Dynamic H2O" at the Children's Museum of Manhattan
Kids can make a splash at the Children’s Museum of Manhattan’s newest summer exhibit, Dynamic H2O! From opening day on May 28 through September, “Dynamic H2O” shares the amazing story of New York City’s water supply, and features a 16-ft interactive water table that allows children to investigate the journey that NYC’s water takes. (Opens Saturday) -
Victorian Gardens Opening Weekend in Central Park
Head to Victorian Gardens, the beautiful amusement park at Wollman Rink, for its opening weekend! The whole family will love rides like the Kite Flyer, which simulates free flight, or the Rockin' Tug, a 'tug boat' that lets up to 24 people ride the waves. (Opens Saturday) -
Living History: Memorial Day Weekend at New-York Historical Society
Spend Memorial Day weekend at the New-York Historical Society. Historical re-enactors from the 3rd New Jersey Regiment will portray soldiers and townsfolk from the period of the American Revolution. Children of all ages can peek inside a Continental soldier’s tent, get answers as to how civilians lived, and explore army uniforms and battle arms dating from our nation’s inception. (Saturday-Sunday) -
Family Festival at the Met Cloisters: Animal Friends
Come to the Cloisters during Memorial Day weekend and see live birds of prey with Master Falconer Lorrie Schumacher, find all the animals you can in the art galleries in the museum's art galleries, and see the important role that certain animals played in helping people survive during medieval times.(Saturday-Sunday) -
