Weekend Planner: Fun Family Activities In NYC (July 10-12)

It’s another summer weekend in New York, and that means lots of opportunities for family fun. Jump-start your Bastille Day celebrations with a block party bash sponsored by the French Institute Alliance Français; learn to tango and merengue in Lincoln Center’s Damrosch Park at LC Kids Dance; or head to Governors Island to check out super-cool vintage city buses. Attend “Princess Phooey” at TADA! Youth Theater for an adorable children’s performance of this musical fairy tale about a rebellious princess. Performances will begin on July 10 and run through August 1. (Opens Friday)
Afro-Latino Festival NYC
The 3rd Annual Afro-Latino Festival celebrates Afro-Latino culture through musical performances, inspiring speakers, art, film, dance and so much more. Join the weekend-long festivities in one of four different locations in Brooklyn and Manhattan. (Friday-Sunday)
RiverFlicks for Kids in Hudson River Park: "Spongebob: Sponge Out of Water" at Pier 46
Make it a movie night for the whole family at Hudson RiverFlick’s screening of “Spongebob: Sponge Out of Water” at Pier 46 in Hudson River Park. The movie and popcorn are both free of charge, so bring your blankets and get ready for a nautical night! (Friday)
New York Transit Museum Vintage Bus Bash on Governors Island
The New York Transit Museum’s Vintage Bus Bash on Governors Island provides the perfect opportunity to introduce children to vintage city buses. This two-day fest will feature four of the museum’s buses from the ’40s and ’50s, including the first air-conditioned bus in the nation–bus 2969–the same model that Jackie Gleason’s character, Ralph Kramden, drove in "The Honeymooners," and more. Midsummer Night Swing: LC Kids Dance in Damrosch Park
This Saturday, put on your dancing shoes and head to Damrosch Park for the LC Kids Dance. Part of Lincoln Center’s Midsummer Night Swing Festival, Dancing Classroom instructors will teach children dance steps to the salsa, swing, tango, and merengue. Then families can enjoy a performance from the Dancing Classrooms Youth Company. No previous dance experience required. (Saturday)
¡Viva La Frida! at the New York Botanical Garden
Celebrate the life of artist Frida Kahlo this weekend at the New York Botanical Garden during ¡Viva La Frida! This two-day festival will feature a flower crown making workshop, an art procession of paper mâché butterflies by Bronx artist Lucrecia Novoa, and live dance and music performances from Calpulli Danza Mexicana and Mariachi Flor de Toloache. Plus, on Saturday, stick around for the Frida Look-Alike Contest (children and men are welcome to enter)! (Saturday-Sunday)
Queens Museum Children's Book Celebration
Attend the Queens Museum Children’s Book Celebration in honor of some of the best local children’s book authors and illustrators. Join in on an afternoon of book readings and art, and if you’re one of the first 200 attendees, you’ll receive a free poster! (Saturday)

Celebrate Bastille Day at New York City’s ultimate street fair in honor of the French National Day, presented by the French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF)!
