WEEKEND PLANNER

FRIDAY

Beginning this Friday through Sunday, August 21, FringeNYC will present its annual FringeJR. festival at the Theater at the 14th St. Y. This year’s family-friendly theatrical productions include “Alienne: The Musical Adventures of My Little Martian,” “And Then Came Tango,” and “My Monster Friend.” Break a leg! (Friday-Sunday)

Councilman Donovan Richards invites all ages to BayswaterPark in Queens for a Water Festival! Activities include bounce houses, water inflatables, and giveaways. Complimentary popcorn and cotton candy will be served during this free event. Splash around! (Friday)

SATURDAY

Discover how soldiers, civilians, and prisoners lived during the summer of 1863 when you visit Governors Island this weekend. The National Park Service’s living historians will reconstruct the past during this two-day Civil War Weekend. All ages are welcome to attend this free event. History awaits! (Saturday and Sunday)

Spend your Saturday at the Dance Theatre of Harlem’s free, annual Street Festival! Fest-goers can enjoy live dance performances from the Dance Theatre of Harlem School and browse a fantastic selection of food, books, and clothing at various street vendor booths. Prepare to be entertained! (Saturday)

This year’s Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in Queens is bigger than ever with performances by the Chinese Music Ensemble of New York, the American Tap Dance Foundation, and others. Be sure to stay for the main event: traditional Chinese dragon boat races featuring more than 120 national dragon boat teams. Get ready, get set, go! (Saturday and Sunday)

Show off your chess skills during the B’rook’lyn Chess Festival in Dr. Ronald McNair Park this Saturday! All ages and abilities are welcome to compete in pick-up games, participate in beginner and intermediate workshops, and even challenge Chess Master Giorgi Kacheishvili. Check it out! (Saturday)

Join the Children’s Museum of Manhattan and Nickelodeon this weekend as they celebrate the premiere of the new Nick Jr. series, “Dora and Friends: Into the City.” During this special two-day event, CMOM visitors can catch a sneak peek of the new show and participate in a Dora costume meet & greet, art activities, and storytimes. Plus, Dora fans can meet the show’s creator Valerie Walsh-Valdez and the 13 year-old actress who voices Dora, Fatima Ptacek. Vamanos! (Saturday and Sunday)

Create a flip-book of your name using bubble letters during the Museum of the City of New York’s Flipping Out workshop on Saturday, August 9. Also, be sure to check out the museum’s latest exhibit, City as Canvas: Graffiti Art from the Martin Wong Collection. Get flippin’ creative! (Saturday)

Ages 4 to 8 are invited to Artist & Craftsman Supply to create their own wooden bug! Workshops Essayer will lead this bugtastic workshop on Saturday afternoon. Children will also be able to make a dancing bear that will surely delight. Be crafty! (Saturday)

SUNDAY

Head over to the Peter Jay Sharp Children’s Glade in Central Park for a concert from Roger Tincknell. Tincknell will sing about nature and animals during this one-hour performance. Sing it out! (Sunday)

Manhattan by Sail invites ages 12 and under and their families to board The Clipper City for a Pirate and Mermaid Sail. While dressed as pirates or mermaids, guests can engage in a variety of seafaring activities such as jewelry making, face-painting, storytelling, and more. Lucky sailors may even find hidden treasure aboard. Shiver me timbers! (Sunday)
