Weekend Planner: June 21-23

Grossology at Liberty Science Center

There’s so much going on this weekend that it was extremely difficult to decide on what our event highlights should be. After careful consideration, we’re spotlighting Coney Island’s famous Mermaid Parade, a big historic ship festival, an initiative that encompasses 1,000 street concerts–seriously–and a few more can’t-miss items below. Enjoy!

STARTING FRIDAY

Start the weekend with a literal bang as more than 1,000 street concerts burst out in music throughout the city, part of the seventh Make Music New York. Rock on! (Friday)

Snot, gas, and all things gross make biology fun at Liberty Science Center’s new Grossology exhibit about the human body, with larger-than-life interactive installations. Laugh and learn. (Friday-Sunday)

Hop onto a historic schooner, explore a retired fireboat, and enjoy rope trick circus acts at the North River Historic Ship Festival at Pier 52 in Lower Manhattan. All aboard! (Friday-Sunday)

Kiddie space cadets Lily and Kosmo take children all around the universe in a Connelly Theater performance with lots of sound effects and projected illustrations. Hop on! (Friday-Sunday)

More outdoor fun: Adventures NYC means climbing, mountain biking, paddleboarding, and more in Central Park alongside music, health clinics, music, and giveaways. Get moving! (Saturday)

Kids will have so much fun eating human-powered ice cream and making puppets at Solar One that they won’t realize all they’re learning about bees, butterflies, and more. Here’s the buzz. (Saturday)

“Little Mermaid” fans get to be a part of Ariel’s world at Coney Island’s famous parade, where all kinds of mermaids swim on floats and in the crowd. Got your fins? (Saturday)

Create your own windcatcher, enjoy stories, and make your own ice cream in the name of vacation at King Manor Museum’s Summer Fest. Woot! (Saturday)

The Cuban Cultural Festival wraps up the Children’s Museum of the Arts “Around the World” series with musical performances and crafts workshops galore. Check it out. (Saturday & Sunday)

Little budding performers can find inspiration at the NDI’s “Big Easy” performance at LaGuardia High School, featuring more than 200 kiddie talents celebrating New Orleans. Get cultured! (Saturday & Sunday)
