Did you know that cold-stunning is a process in which sea turtles become immobile due to the dramatic decrease in water temperature? A cold-stunned turtle will appear dead, but will actually be alive. Without proper intervention, though, a cold-stunned turtle will eventually die.
Learn this and many other facts about the endangered sea turtle as a biologist from the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Education leads a discussion at the Theodore Roosevelt Nature Center on Nov. 3, and at the Quogue Wildlife Refuge on Nov. 14 and 17.
Last season, the foundation recovered 11 cold-stunned turtles and, thanks to the public and volunteer beach patrollers, were able to save them.
The lecture is recommended for older children.
