For modern fathers who have questions about balancing work and family responsibilities, negotiating the conflicts that can arise from parenting with a partner who has a different style, and figuring out just what it means to be a dad in today’s world, the 92Y is excited to present their annual Parenting Conference: “Why Fathers Matter.”
The conference, is a unique opportunity for dads but is welcoming to interested couples and moms, as well, says Sally Tannen, director of 92Y’s Parenting Center. “Historically, mothers have received the lion’s share of support from the community, but this new generation of fathers is a highly involved one,” she says. “They just haven’t had many ways to connect with other fathers, or easy access to parenting expertise. We really want dads to make connections with each other here at 92Y– after all, male bonding doesn’t have to stop once you have kids.”
Coming up on Sunday, January 25, from 10am-3pm, the conference, which is sponsored in part by Dove Men+Care, will feature parenting experts and a diverse group of fathers—including Michael Thompson, author of Raising Cain: The Emotional Lives of Boys; Paul Raeburn, author of Do Fathers Matter? What Science Is Telling Us About the Parent We’ve Overlooked; Michael Kimmel, sociologist and author of Guyland: The Perilous World Where Boys Become Men; Neil Blumenthal, Warby Parker co-founder (and working dad); and Matt Schneider, at-home dad, and co-founder of NYC Dads Group—discussing issues pertinent to dads today.
The conference will begin a keynote address by Michael Thompson, called “Moving Past Your Own Father,” and will include a panel on parenting partnerships called “a Parenting Partnership,” moderated by New York Family’s editor-in-chief Eric Messinger, featuring an at-home dad/working mom, a same-sex couple, and a working dad/at-home mom. Additional offerings include” Juggling Dads: Finding Time for Work, Family and Play,” and “The Science of Fatherhood: How the Research is Changing the Conversation.”
