Don’t chicken out

In Brooklyn, the chicken came first.

At the Brooklyn Schenectady Avenue Community Garden, the city’s largest garden chicken coop, a new workshop series is bringing the farm to the urban dweller curious about keeping chickens in the city.

The monthly series covers the fundamentals of doing just that, with the next one on July 18 focused on children. Bring the whole family for a fun day in the garden as the New York Restoration Project explores chickens and eggs and the difference between factory farm and organically produced eggs.

Children will also have an opportunity to create art inspired by the chickens and even hold them. But be forewarned, you can’t take one home with you afterwards.

Fun with Chickens! at the Schenectady Avenue Community Garden [91 Schenectady Ave. between Dean and Pacific streets in Crown Heights, (212) 333-2552], July 18 from 2-4 pm. Free. To register, call or e-mail [email protected]. For more info, visit www.nyrp.org.
