The Greater New York Councils of the Boy Scouts of America will host the first Pinewood Derby World Championship on June 27 in the center of Times Square in Manhattan. Registration for the event is now open, and more than 200 Cub Scouts from across the nation are expected to attend.

The Pinewood Derby was founded by Scoutmaster Donald Murphy in 1953, and first held in Manhattan Beach, CA. Since its founding, more than one million Scouts have participated in the event. This year will be the first Pinewood Derby World Championship, featuring youth racers from across the nation.

Scouts will construct their own Pinewood Derby cars using materials they are given from official BSA Pinewood Derby kits. Scouts are required to complete the construction of their own race cars. A fast Pinewood Derby car can reach a speed of up to 20 miles per hour.
