Pixelcraft Kids in Larchmont Adds Comics & Pop Art Class

Pixelcraft Kids, a play-based center in Larchmont, offers interactive classes that offset children’s screen time by teaching natural developmental skills and the concepts of graphic design.

“In a world where children are overexposed to digital media like computers and tablets, more imagination and playtime is needed. Our classes are all hands-on and teach students the concepts of graphic design without a computer,” says owner Rebecca Arias.

On Oct. 12 Pixelcraft Kids launched their newest course, Comics & Pop Art, for children in the first to fifth grades. The class teaches art fundamentals and advanced techniques while working with different materials, mediums, and designs to create pop art, comic books, and more. Comics & Pop Art takes place Thursdays from 3:30-5:30pm through Dec. 7 (no class Nov. 23).

Pixelcraft Kids also offers two additional courses, including Minecraft Unplugged, a screen-free spin on the video game for children in kindergarten to fifth grade. The unique course teaches children how to play Minecraft without a computer screen or game controller, but rather through hands-on-learning and fine motor skills. Children will learn how to cut and build real Minecraft structures and characters while learning the true meaning of 3-D. Minecraft Unplugged takes place Wednesdays and Fridays from 3:30-5:30pm through Dec. 8 (no class Nov. 22 and 24).

“In our classes children learn to love what they make, even if it’s not perfect. I see these children learning to value what they make with their hands and even valuing the work of their peers,” Arias says.

Pixelcraft Kids also offers Lego Minifigures, during which children in the first to fifth grades become Lego designers. Through this class children are able to create minifigures from a variety of materials and accessories, using their imagination to create their Lego’s logo along with many other interactive activities. Lego Minifigures takes place Tuesdays from 3:30-5:30pm through Dec. 5 (no class Oct. 31).

“Our classes focus on more than just graphic design. We see students stretching their social skills through play and interaction with one another,” Arias says.

Pixelcraft Kids offers classes, summer camps, school vacation camps, birthday parties, and an after-school program for children in kindergarten to sixth grade. Pixelcraft Kids’ current classes, Comics & Pop Art, Minecraft Unplugged, and Lego Minifigures, all offer rolling enrollment.
