Math-Only Learning Center Opens in Greenwich and Trumbull

Mathnasium, a math-only learning center that aims to help students catch up, get ahead, and stay ahead in math knowledge, recently opened academic enrichment centers in Trubmull and Greenwich.

Mathnasium is like a gymnasium for the mind, says David Lubner, the director of the math-only learning center in Darien. The Mathnasium learning centers specialize in teaching math skills to students from preschool to college and beyond. Last month, Lubner opened the Greenwich chapter of Mathnasium, and another location opened in Trumbull last month under director Wei Lin.

The focus of the curriculum at this international franchise is to teach math in a way that makes sense to each child, says Lubner, explaining that the Mathnasium method aims to encourage understanding in lieu of memorization.

The year-round program helps elementary, middle-school, and high-school students learn problem-solving skills and fill gaps in learning. The program also offers homework help, enrichment courses, test preparation, and helps students build constructive work habits.

Lubner is now accepting members at the Greenwich location, and registration is open at the Trumbull location. Before registering for the program at either location, an assessment is administered to get a sense of the child’s needs. The assessment, which is given by appointment or walk-in, is used to create an individualized learning plan for each student.

A main goal of the program is to motivate kids using math-related games and positive reinforcement. “We try to make it as much fun as possible,” Lubner says, adding that sometimes kids need a change of focus to stay enthusiastic.

Mathnasium of Greenwich is open Monday-Thursday, 3-7:30pm, and Friday, 3-6:30pm. Mathnasium of Trumbull is open Monday-Thursday, 3-7:30pm; Friday by appointment; and Saturday, 10am-2pm.
