Growing up in one of the fashion capitals of the world, even
the youngest New Yorkers have a great sense of style (starting in the stroller!). That’s why city girls who love
creating their own unique looks will adore the new picture book Birdie’s
Big-Girl Dress by Sujean Rim. —
It’s Birdie’s birthday, but her favorite
party dress doesn’t fit her anymore (shriek!). She visits the boutique down the street
(with Mom, of course) but the fabulous gowns available just don’t work for dancing and eating cake like a little girl ought to be doing.
What’s a little fashionista to do? Go vintage, of course. Birdie puts together a
brand new outfit by rummaging through her grandparents’ clothes in the attic.
Creative magic ensues as Birdie pairs a stunning floral headpiece and pink tulle skirt with more formal menswear-inspired styles like a grey vest and black bow-tie. It’s Project Runway for toddlers–but about ten times as adorable.
The multi-talented author-illustrator Sujean Rim graduated from Parsons School of Design
and was originally a shoe and accessory designer–credentials that show in her
colorful, textured watercolors. But beware: this delightful children’s book might have
your little raiding your closet for new looks!
