The Final Touches To Your Marathon Prep

Under Armour

With  NYC’s ING Marathon just days away, you’ll want to make sure that you have everything in place. Running shoes that have seen some mileage but not too much? Check.

Shorts or tights that you done some long runs in (thereby eliminating any discomfort or unexpected chaffing that might result from wearing a new piece of gear)? Check.

Moms, proper-fitting sports bras? (This is especially important if you’re in the nursing stages of mommying.) Check.

Socks that you love and trust? (Blisters are often an inevitable part of running 26.2, but choosing the right socks can help lessen the severity and/or pain.) Check.

With temperatures slated to be in the brisk low 40s to start the morning, you’ll want to make sure you’re doubly prepared to face the conditions and–pun intended–run against the wind.

Check out Under Armour’s ear warmers (see above) if wearing a full hat isn’t your thing.

Gloves might be a crucial part of your marathon outfit, at least in the wee hours while you’re waiting on the bridge to cross the start line on Staten Island. No need to freeze; instead keep  your fingers toasty with the perfect winter running gloves.

Even if you think you might not need a long-sleeve wicking shirt or jacket for the entire time you’re out on the course, it’s not a bad idea to start out with one. (If you have friends and family coming out to watch, plan to toss them your heavier clothing items as your body heats up with each passing mile.)

Abboccato

Finally, mapping out your running gear isn’t the only important part; you need to be smart about your pre-race meal. Pasta is an obvious choice, but it doesn’t have to be boring. And it doesn’t have to be at home either. A favorite NYC Italian staple, Abboccato, is offering its third annual all-pasta meal for runners on Marathon “Eve.”  Gluten free and whole wheat options will be available all day until 11 pm and picky kids can enjoy simple pasta-with-butter-and-cheese dishes, but we bet they’ll love the Bucatini Alla Amatriciana (shown here).
