5 Winter Health Tips For Mom And Baby

Chances are, both you and baby have had your fair share of colds and dry skin bouts this year. Since winter is only halfway over, I thought I’d share some simple tips for surviving the rest of the season intact! Here are my favorite products for battling everything from runny noses to cracked lips.

honestProtect Your (And Your Baby’s) Skin. Both mom and baby’s skin can get so red and chapped in winter. I love The Honest Co. Healing Balm for both my son and I! I use it on my dry hands, cuticles and lips. Plus, I put it on my son at night wherever his skin is dry and he wakes up with skin looking calm and beautiful.  It is also great for under little noses that keep getting wiped and irritated. Bonus: it can also be used to treat baby’s diaper rash, making it a must for your diaper bag in winter!

tataLayer Your Moisturizers. In addition to switching to a heavier, daily moisturizer for my face during the wintertime (Dr. Hauschka’s Rose Day Cream is amazing: it contains beeswax and avocado oil, so it really protects against the wind and cold ), I like to tell clients and friends who struggle with dry skin to “double up.” That means layering your products on both face and body.  My go-to body lotion is Nature’s Gate Colloidal Oatmeal Lotion. Paired with Dr. Hauschka’s Moor Lavender Body Oil, I get a beautiful, warming and protective combo.  On your face, I recommend layering a serum (or a face oil) under your heavy winter day cream for extra protection.  I like these: Arcona Hydrating Serum, which contains Hyaluronic acid to bind moisture to the skin, Dr. Hauschka Regenerating Serum, which is highly moisturizing and calming on the skin, (Martha Stewart loves it!), and Tata Harper Rejuvenating Serum, which contains a natural hyaluronic acid, making it smell incredible and feel like silk. It is also important to change your cleansers in winter and use either a milk, balm or oil cleanser at least once a day if you suffer from dry or dehydrated skin. Dr. Hausckha’s Cleansing Milk is amazing for dry skin or makeup removal and Josie Maran’s Argan Oil Cleanser is another great alternative.

lamerLove Your Lips. Your lips are gonna get chapped this winter, so you’re going to need something good. Why not treat yourself to a beautiful lip balm you will love and use to the last drop? For a splurge, I love The Lip Balm by La Mer. It’s silky and infused with their famed sea minerals. If you love anything rose-scented, you will flip over Baum de Rose by Terry Baum. Lastly, I am completely obsessed with this Sara Happ’s The Lip Slip One Luxe Gloss, which now comes in a tube for easier application (she also makes incredible and yummy lip scrubs). This balm is ultra-thick and was the only thing that protected my lips during the recent ice-cold weather!

ultimaVitamin Protection. I have always been a huge fan of Emergen-C vitamin packets, but through following Gucci Westman on Instagram (Gucci Westman is a very famous NYC-based makeup artist, head of Revlon, and one of my mom idols!), I learned about . These have zero sugar and no artificial ingredients and make your water taste like yummy lemonade. I take one packet in 8 oz. of water when I am feeling rundown (always) or feel a cold coming on. They are also good if you fly a lot to ward off any potential viruses in the air.  I bought mine at Whole Foods and you can also get them online and they make a toddler version my son loves: he calls it his raspberry juice!

kissYou’re Sick: Now What? I love Kiss My Face Cold and Flu Bath and Shower Gel. It is the perfect feel-good product: it opens sinuses, awakens and enlivens you when you feel crummy, and can be used on babies, too. Use it in the shower or take a nice hot soak in the tub.
