On Passover, the Torah instructs Jews not to eat (or even posess) “chometz” all seven days of Passover. “Chometz” is defined as any five grains (wheat, rye, spelt, oats, and barley) that have come into contact with water for more than 18 minutes. Only unleavened bread, “matzoh”, may be eaten at this time. The reason leavened bread is prohibited is in honor of the Hebrews in bondage in Egypt, as well as the haste in which they left. They did not have time to wait for the bread to rise. Today Jews celebrate Passover in commemoration of their liberation from slavery in Egypt.—
