The 3rd New Jersey Regiment at the New-York Historical Society
Everyone loves the Broadway musical “Hamilton,” but you may not know that many of the historical events within it took place right here in New York City! This Friday, a reenacting troop will be stationed at the New-York Historical Society to answer questions and show what life was like for Revolutionary War soldiers as they fought against the British for freedom. Arthur Ashe Kids' Day at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center
This Saturday, Hess will present Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day at the US Open in honor of the tennis icon. This annual event, which is the largest single-day tennis and entertainment event in the world, will feature live music by Flo Rida, Zara Larsson, Troye Sivan, and more. Plus, kids will have the amazing opportunity to watch Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic–two of the top men’s players in the world–duke it out in fun exhibition matches and skills competitions! Before the stadium show, beginning at 1pm, little tennis stars can enjoy free tennis activities on the grounds of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center starting at 9:30am. (Saturday) -
The Great Escape in Brooklyn Bridge Park
To celebrate the 240th anniversary of the Battle of Brooklyn, head to Brooklyn Bridge Park. Events include a living history program and a boat race with Glover's Marblehead Regiment! (Saturday) -
Make It Splashy! at The High Line
The Make It! series at the High Line continues with Make It Splashy! All ages can work in the mobile garden to learn how plants absorb water, participate in water-based craft activities, listen to stories, and more. (Saturday) -
Family Day: Make Colonial Toys at Morris-Jumel Mansion
Children of all ages can play colonial games in the park of the Morris-Jumel Mansion this Saturday. Visitors will also be able to make toys from the era, such as a whirligig! Pre-registration is recommended. (Saturday) -
Silent Disco at Pier 1 in Riverside Park South
Two DJs will be simultaneously playing two different genres of music at this all-ages dance party as part of the Parks Department's Summer on the Hudson series. Put on a pair of headphones and choose what you want to listen to, while everyone else does the same! (Saturday) -
2016 South Slope Soap Box Derby
This Saturday, watch the South Slope Soap Box Derby, the culmination of the Soap Box Summer Workshop! Kids between the ages of 7 and 15 have built their own soap boxes throughout the summer, which they will race during the end of this last workshop. Race begins in front of Open Source Gallery. The 240th Commemoration of the Battle of Brooklyn at Green-Wood Cemetery
Take a trolley into the past during this year’s Commemoration of the Battle of Brooklyn at Green-Wood Cemetery. The Battle of Brooklyn, the first battle of the American Revolution to be fought after the Declaration of Independence had been signed, took place in 1776. In memory of the battle, families can take a ticketed trolley tour of Green-Wood’s 478 luscious green acres, experience life during revolutionary-era New York through re-enactments and historical cooking demos, participate in the Battle of Brooklyn Parade, and take part in the closing ceremony. Wash Day in Prospect Park
Head to Prospect Park this Sunday for Wash Day! Learn how people cleaned their clothes during the 19th century, and cool down while in the hot summer sun! For children with Autism Spectrum disorders, the park will also host a Wash Day (from 10am-12pm) designed for kids to enjoy Lefferts Historic House in a way that works for them, such as a carousel ride with the lights and sounds turned off for the noise-sensitive.
