New York’s Fringe Festival this year will host a variety of programming for kids and families, including several theater productions. Read on for more information.
The 14th annual New York International Fringe Festival, aka FringeNYC, is the largest multi-arts festival in North America. This year, FringeNYC, runs August 13-29, will present programming by 197 of the world’s best emerging theater troupes and dance companies in 20 venues throughout Lower Manhattan. FringeJR is a division of the festival that caters to kids and families. The FringeJR productions listed below are geared specifically toward families with children ages 5-12; tickets for kids are $10 for each show. Good Good Trouble on Bad Bad Island, presented by Endstation Theatre Company
A bad, bad Idol challenges good, good Rosa with a series of impossible tasks – but what happens when she starts doing the impossible? This wildly inventive adventure finds that sometimes family and goodness can be found in the most unlikely of places. August 16 at 7pm; August 18 at 4:30pm; August 21 at 4:15pm; August 23 at 1pm; August 28 at 2pm. For ages 8-10. The Robert Moss Theatre, 440 Lafayette Street, 3rd floor, between Astor Place and East 4th Street.

Heron & Crane, presented by DA! Theatre Collective
Adapted from a Russian folktale, this is the story of two strong-willed swamp birds who discover that becoming friends requires a little give and take. This interactive comedy explores diversity, problem-solving, and ecology, and has a new ending every time. August 18 at 12pm; August 19 at 2pm and 7:30pm; August 20 at 5:30pm; August 21 at 3:45pm. For ages 5-10. Studio at Cherry Lane Theatre, 38 Commerce Street between 7th Avenue and Hudson Street.

The Order of Blattaria, A Kid’s Guide to Survival, presented by Arimaw Productions
Birds, bubbles, black lights, and blattaria – laugh yourself silly in this interactive and whimsical show that has been described as “Pee Wee Herman meets Late Nite Catechism.” August 25 at 12:30pm; August 26 at 3:45pm; August 27 at 2pm; August 28 at 5:15pm; August 29 at 12pm. For ages 8-12. Dixon Place, 161A Chrystie Street between Rivington and Delancey Streets.
