6 TIPS FOR GETTING YOUR CHILD PSYCHED ABOUT THE GAME
Now that you’ve prepped the nibbles for touchdown after touchdown, here are some
tips to get the whole family in the game time mood.
1. Buy jerseys! Check out stores like Modell’s, Target and
Sports Authority for some team spirit action. Deck out the whole family–from baby to grandpa–in your team’s uniform and get ready to root and cheer! Note to parents: the Manning jerseys are expensive!
2. In preparation for the
game, watch YouTube clips of past plays and/or
read newspaper articles explaining how the game works, the rules of
football and describe the teams are that are playing. In order to get
your children truly interested, give them the back story so they know
what they’re watching. You can even tell them about specific players and
see if they can locate their jersey numbers on the field.
3. For once, tell the kids that it’s OK to shout and holler at the TV.
Audience participation is encouraged. Indoor voices? Not on game day! They’ll think it’s better than opening presents on Christmas morning.
4. Don’t insist that little ones watch every moment. Are you kidding? Their attention
spans simply can’t handle hours of game-watching. And you want game day to be family fun, not family obligations. Have them settle themselves in front of the tube, but provides toys, puzzles and other diversions in case their attentions wander.
5. In preparation for the game, watch YouTube clips of past plays and/or
read newspaper articles explaining how the game works, the rules of football and describe the teams are that are playing. In order to get your children truly interested, give them the back story so they know what they’re watching. You can even tell them about specific players and see if they can locate their jersey numbers on the field.
6. Use the game as a teaching opportunity to explain the
essence of rivalry to your kids. After going through the rules, talk about sportsmanship, being a team player and what victory means to the winning and the losing teams. Ask your little players if they have any questions and be ready to field them.
