On The Blogroll: Mommy Shorts

The NYMetroParents blogroll features the best blogs in the parenting world, from New York and beyond. Here’s a closer look at why we love these mom bloggers and dad bloggers and how they’re shaping the web for parenting today.

Blogging From: New York, New York

Mommy Shorts might just be the mother load of mommy blogs, no pun intended. This blog/parenting humor/witty advice/adorable baby log/brilliantly designed page is a tour de force in the blogosphere; you could truly surf around its brilliance for ages.

Founder Ilana is a multi-faceted Manhattan mom of one. Not only does she tackle a day job in advertising, she’s also a completely involved mom with toddler Mazzy, who is more adorable than words, and rocking a great marriage to husband and hands on daddy Mike. If you’re scoping out top-notch parenting advice, just “Ask Dr. B” through an insightful column geared at getting you the best mommy answers in the biz. Are you desperately in need of a few laughs after a long day with your tot? Poke around the site for founder Ilana’s gorgeously designed and oh-so-funny, dead-on pie charts (example: Focus of a Two-Year Old at Their Birthday Party…pie chart says: 78% of the focus goes to cake.) She keeps the laughs going with an entire section dedicated to “Celebrity Parenting Snark,” keeping non-famous parents in the know with the luxurious lives of the rich and famous and their even more famous little ones. Suri Cruise and Rachel Zoe’s tiny guy Skyler are regulars here.

If you’re still reading this review and haven’t logged in yet, I’ll give you even more reasons to be a Mommy Shorts convert. You can seek out guidance on the best in baby design. Whether it be cribs, artisan birthday cakes or innovative play kitchen sets for your little baker, the best and finest digs for your kid are on Mommy Shorts. Every mom loves to brag too, and what better way than with photo contests and fan albums?  Themed photo contests like “My baby looks like…” are extremely popular and garner loads of entries from tons of proud mamas alike. A sponsored sidebar called “Momversation” helps spark debate from real moms concerned about issues with how we teach body image to our children and what the right age to send your kiddies off to kindergarten should be.

It all comes down to this: if you’re a mom who wants to always be in the loop with parenting, brilliant anecdotes, stories, conversations, photos and pick the brain of a fearless leader type mom, start clicking your way over to Mommy Shorts and be just as amazed with this great blog as you were with your baby’s milestones. — Melanie Baker

Speakitaly NYC

<p>SPEAKITALY NYC offers stimulating and entertaining lessons for children 0 to 16 years through a wide combination of activities based on the communicative approach anchored in the Common European Framework of Reference: active learning (group work, role plays, etc.) and practice exercises aimed to improve listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Kids will start speaking and using Italian in a very natural way.  Small classes capped at 6 students to make sure each one gets the needed attention and facilitate learners' progress. </p> <p>Our method is driven by a didactic method that is the result of constant updates, professional certifications and more than 10 years of experience in working with non-native speakers from different native languages and levels of knowledge.</p> <p>Our aim is to develop a range of Italian language skills while improving accuracy that will enable the students and participants to interact without stress or feeling rushed. We want to help those in the community really embrace not only the true culture in Italy but the Italian culture within New York City… Who doesn’t love what Italy represents in the kitchen, in history & in the arts?</p> <p>Speakitaly wants to support multilingual families who want to learn a new language or pass along their ancestor’s heritage and culture. Raffaella, the founder said: "We see language awareness and intercultural sensitivity as the milestones for an inclusive society. Italian, like all other languages, is an enrichment and a growth in every way. Vi aspettiamo!"</p>
