Wintertime is the perfect time to sign up your child for a wonderful extracurricular class in music, dance, art, sports, cooking, gymnastics, or more. Good thing our city has an amazing array of offerings when it comes to kids’ classes. Here are our favorites for all ages and skill levels available this season.

14th Street Y

Capoeira is a Brazilian form of martial arts that combines dance, music, and simple acrobatic moves. It’s played as an interactive game inside a circle with music and songs. Capoeira class, for ages 3-5, helps children develop motor coordination, balance, flexibility, and an awareness of space. MAGIC’s colorful baby gym has been called “a treasure chest for little ones” by the Wall Street Journal. American Museum of Natural History

When you snack on potato chips or enjoy spicy Thai noodles, do you ever wonder where your food comes from? How was it grown? What makes it so delicious? How do different cultures use food to celebrate? Applause NYC 

Is your kid a little bit Broadway and a little bit rock ‘n’ roll? In Half Broadway/Half Rock, children will spend the first half of the semester being introduced to a different Broadway show each week. The Art Farm in the City

Children can learn about a new animal every week at The Art Farm in the City this winter. Class begins with groovin’ to the guitar, bouncing with the balls, and dancing with friends while singing along with all types of instruments. Once the Animal of the Week appears, tots can touch, enjoy, and hear all about him. ArtXplorers

ArtXplorers art series for 3- to 6-year-olds will take place this season on a bi-monthly basis on Fridays at 2:30pm. The class will explore museums such as the Metropolitan Museum, Jewish Museum, New York Historical Society, Guggenheim Museum, and others. Themes for this series will include Mythological Creatures; Mysteries of Ancient Egyptian Mummies; Princes, Princesses and Knights; Pop, Splatter, Dot: Modern Art; and more. Asphalt Green’s Little Shooters Basketball Academy provides an excellent introduction to the basics of basketball for 3- and 4-year-olds. Ballet Academy East

The Ballet Club

Bilingual Buds’ Mommy and Me Mandarin Program is a playful and interactive immersion experience for children ages 1-3. Children’s Museum of the Arts (CMA)

Art Slam is a free monthly party full of music, a pop-up photobooth, food, and of course, art-making for sixth-ninth graders.
