Camp Maritime launches its inaugural season on June 25. It will offer a variety of activities for children ages 8 to 14 who have an interest in maritime culture. Campers will learn skills such as kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, fishing, sailing, and motor-boating. Children must have basic swimming skills and be capable of light exertion to participate in camp.
The camp is based at its 30-foot private dock on Emmons Avenue, but staff also has access to 144 launch sites around the city. It includes a 10,000 square-foot space for activities, indoor and outdoor eating areas, a waterfront viewing area for parents, and an indoor facility for learning with smart screen technologies, a private meditation room, and recreation area.
The curriculum is based on experiential student-centered discovery learning. All activities are hands-on and led by experienced educators and sailors.
A typical day kicks off with an organic breakfast provided by the camp, followed by a series of activities that take place on a boat. Children will help prepare the boat, cast off lines, and head out onto the water to practice new skills, play games, or explore. At the end of each day, they’ll practice derigging the boat, secure all equipment, and discuss what they learned.
The camp is also offering the Young Explorers program for 7-year-old children. While most of the activities are the same as the older group with the exception of diving, windsurfing, and kiteboarding, young campers will have more supervision and rest time.
“At Camp Maritime, our mission is to share our passion for nautical activities and wellness by providing campers with an experience of a lifetime as they gain confidence while learning on-water skills, make new friends, enjoy healthy meals, and spend the summer outdoors, while being part of something truly special on the shores of Sheepshead Bay,” said Elliot Groman, director of fun and COO at the camp.
Registration for Camp Maritime is now open. More information can be found on the Camp Maritime website.
