Montessori Children, a preschool in Port Jefferson Station, will offer tutoring services in all subjects for grade-school aged children on Long Island. The program is customized and works around the students already busy after-school schedule.
The Montessori method allows students to learn at their own pace through their own interests.
Montessori Children of Port Jefferson Station typically caters to children ages 2½ to 5 years old with morning and afternoon preschool programs. In summer 2013, director Sharon Glasson will start offering a customizable tutoring program for children ages 5 to 9. “At that age they have football and dance, so we will work around their schedules,” Glasson says.
With the new tutoring program, Glasson aims to introduce elementary-aged students to the Montessori philosophy. The philosophy—what the preschool’s curriculum is based on—follows the belief that children cultivate their own desire to learn and become independent, self-motivated learners by experiencing things through all five senses. “Teachers don’t lecture, but instead demonstrate to the child so [he or she] will know how to use the activity to judge and correct themselves,” Glasson says.
Tutoring will be available in any area a child is struggling, including math and languages. Montessori Children’s common core curriculum helps children advance in any area, says Glasson.
