The Long Island Aquarium in Riverhead is proud to announce they have been accredited by the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums (AMMPA). This accreditation is recognized as ‘the gold standard’ for zoological parks and aquariums with marine mammals throughout the world. The Long Island Aquarium, a popular venue for Long Island families, was recognized by the AMMPA for its dedication to the highest standards of animal care, exceptional welfare practices, conservation and education, and state of the art veterinary practices.
In order to receive this endorsement, the Long Island Aquarium endured a rigorous, two-year process consisting of gathering information, submitting a complex application, and an intensive inspection of the Aquarium’s facility and staff.
“It’s very exciting to be considered among the top marine mammal facilities in the world and to finally get this team the recognition it deserves for being some of the best professional animal specialists in the world as well,” says Candyce Paparo, director of animal training at the aquarium.
The Long Island Aquarium is a privately-owned facility featuring a large all-living coral reef display, a 120,000-gallon shark tank, year-round sea lion shows, butterflies from all over the globe, the largest, living insect zoo in North America, and more than 100 exhibits and interactive experience.
