BIG TIP: Pediatric Emergency Rooms And Urgent Services

Every hospital in the country has an emergency room—this is a given. But did you know that Manhattan has specialized ERs designed to work with children in need of urgent care or emergency services? In certain situations, children need specified care, and some facilities feel it’s best to separate the kid from the adult patients. In Manhattan, there are two child-specific ERs around the city: Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital of New York-Presbyterian (childrensnyp.org) and New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center for Emergency Medicine (nypemergency.org).

Urgent Care facilities are a great resource for families in need of immediate services, but not necessarily emergency care. One of NYC’s leading and most coveted hospitals, Mount Sinai, recently opened an urgent care facility on the Upper West Side. The Mount Sinai Urgent Care Upper West Side (mountsinai.org/urgentcare), which is open seven days a week, offers shorter wait-times and lower costs than ERs. Everything from asthma to broken fingers to fevers and flu can be treated. Best part is, no appointments are necessary! Plus, City MD Urgent Care (citymd.net) is another great organization that has several locations around the city. Also open seven days a week, City MD offers great pediatric care, x-ray services, ultrasounds and much more. All major insurance plans are accepted! Similarly, EMERGeCARE (emergecare.com) on the Upper East Side provides a reliable alternative to a primary care physician when your family physician or pediatrician is not able to see you promptly. It’s a viable option when a trip to the emergency room seems like too much. With or without insurance, you can receive the personal treatment you deserve.

Our campers flourish at Lee Mar due to the structured environment we provide which allows our campers to feel comfortable and secure. Careful study is made of parent input, school (IEPs), camper interview, etc., so that the interests and needs of each child can best be determined for suitable grouping prior to the camper arriving. At Lee Mar the children find comfort and friendship with children of similar age and functioning level. From this foundation we encourage our campers to embrace and learn new skills and have new experiences which they can build upon on their return home. We also focus on building friendships which last throughout the year, as well as learning how to cope with the dynamics of group situations. Development of the whole child is our goal. We work hard at improving the daily living, social, and life skills of our campers, while giving them the happiest summer of their lives!
