It’s that time of year again—time to take the ornaments, lights and angel off of your Christmas tree, dismantle holiday decorations and pack them away until next December. But what to do with the tree itself?
If your family has a real Christmas tree, the NYC Department of Sanitation will have special tree collections from Monday, January 4th until Friday, January 15th; just leave your tree outside (without any decorations or tinsel) to have your tree picked up. However, if you’d like a greener option, why not contribute your tree to the city’s great new program, Mulchfest?—
Mulchfest is the brainchild of the NYC Department of Sanitation, the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation, and GreeNYC, in which Christmas trees are turned into wood chips that will help nourish plants and trees all throughout NYC. Plus, families that participate in Mulchfest even have the option to take home your own bag of mulch for use in your own garden or for a city tree near you that’s deserving of some tender loving care.
To participate in Mulchfest, take your tree sans any lights, tree stands, tinsel and ornaments down to any of the 35 chipping sites or 35 additional drop-off locations through out the city on January 8th and 8th, 2011.
Some places in Manhattan that are participating in Mulchfest as drop off sites or chipping sites include Central Park, Bowling Green, Morningside Park, Washington Square Park and La Plaza Cultural.
For more information on Mulchfest, please view the official site here. Please note that it has a list of all drop-off sites and chipping locations throughout the tri-state area as well.
