Duck, Duck, Camp!
On your mark, get set…quack! At the 44th annual Duck BBQ & Duck Race, visitors can enjoy a day of food, hayrides, bouncy rides, clowns, raffles, music, and food. At 4pm you can either purchase one of 7,000 rubber ducks to race for $10 each (and a chance to win $1 million!) or cheer on your favorite yellow ducky. Proceeds from the day benefit Camp Pa Qua Tuck in Center Moriches, which strives to help children and young adults with both physical and developmental disabilities achieve equality, dignity, and maximum independence through a safe and quality program of camping, recreation, and education.

Drip, Draw, Build, FoldThere’s always concern that art programs will get short shrift in school budgets. Thankfully, local museums, libraries, and community centers provide a safety net. Take advantage of some of these hands-on artistic activities and watch the sparks fly from your child’s imagination. Sept. 1 and 15: A Drip Painting Workshop for kids follows a family tour of the Pollock-Krasner House and studio in East Hampton. Sept. 14, 21, 28: In Learn to Draw with Art Teacher Amy at the West Islip Community Center, your child will draw animals, landscapes, people, and artist masterworks while experimenting with different materials. Sept. 23: In Building Blocks Workshop at Ward Melville Heritage Organization in Stony Brook, families will use 60,000 LEGO pieces to build 50 sites that will be placed on a 600-square-foot architectural treasure map. Space is limited to 50 families and registration is recommended. Sept. 23: Artists of all ages and abilities are invited to Draw Out! at the Heckscher Museum of Art in Huntington. Participants will construct a giant color wheel collage, build a colossal color tower, or try figure drawing from live models. In the park, they can create a watercolor, charcoal, or pastel drawing. FREE! Sept. 23: Bring your children to Kids History Craft: Origami Toys at Brentwood Library, where they’ll create their own toy using the ancient Japanese art of paper folding. FREE! |
Sept. 15 and 29
Giving Estuaries a Hand
Adults and children can volunteer to help restore local estuaries through the Marine Meadows Program. Volunteers work alongside Cornell Cooperative Extension staff in either South Hampton or Sag Harbor to weave eelgrass shoots into burlap planting discs. Once the discs are complete, they will be planted by SCUBA-certified CCE staff in local restoration sites. Call 631-852-8660 x27 to register for the program.
