Our roundup of fun and free/low-cost things to do with kids in Suffolk County, Long Island, this September includes fall festivals and fairs, pirates on stage, art classes and workshops, and the annual Duck BBQ and Race.
Sept. 9
Duck, Duck, Camp!
On your mark, get set…quack! At the 44th annual Duck BBQ & Duck Race, visitors can enjoy a day of food, hayrides, bouncy rides, clowns, raffles, music, and food. At 4pm you can either purchase one of 7,000 rubber ducks to race for $10 each (and a chance to win $1 million!) or cheer on your favorite yellow ducky. Proceeds from the day benefit Camp Pa Qua Tuck in Center Moriches, which strives to help children and young adults with both physical and developmental disabilities achieve equality, dignity, and maximum independence through a safe and quality program of camping, recreation, and education.

Pirate Peril
Steve McCoy (pictured, left) is Long John Silver and Hans Paul Hendrickson (pictured, right) is Jim Hawkins in a musical adaptation of Treasure Island. The story, based on the book by Robert Louis Stevenson, follows the adventures of a young boy who finds himself face to face with a notorious buccaneer.

Fall on the Farm
Celebrate the season at the Hallockville Fall Festival and Craft Show in Riverhead and enjoy a traditional North Fork country fair featuring artisan vendors, food, music, children’s games, animals, and demonstrations of traditional crafts. Proceeds benefit the Hallockville Museum Farm, a nonprofit organization.

Giving Estuaries a Hand
Adults and children can volunteer to help restore local estuaries through the Marine Meadows Program. Volunteers work alongside Cornell Cooperative Extension staff in either South Hampton or Sag Harbor to weave eelgrass shoots into burlap planting discs. Once the discs are complete, they will be planted by SCUBA-certified CCE staff in local restoration sites. Call 631-852-8660 x27 to register for the program.

Sept. 21-23
Sesame on Stage
Bert, Ernie, Elmo, Cookie Monster, and Big Bird gather up their friends and head to the Nassau Coliseum in Sesame Street Live! Can’t Stop Singing. In this musical production, Elmo gets his hands on a magic wand and singing, dancing, and audience participation soon follow.
Sept. 22-23 and 29-30
Buccaneers and Buried Gold
Children use their map-reading, counting, and language skills to help Dora, Boots, and the rest of the gang find the hidden treasure in Dora’s Pirate Adventure, on stage at the Long Island Children’s Museum.
