Another summer, another Fourth of July. Will you be mixing lemonade and reapplying sunscreen while the grill sizzles away? Maybe you want to avoid that scene and do something cultural in recognition of the holiday. If you’re ready for a change of pace, here are some fun options:
Powdered Wigs and Pie
Historic Richmond Town in nearby Staten Island hosts its Independence Day Celebration with style. Mingle with folks wearing colonial fashion, watch a pie-making demonstration and enter your own in the Pie Contest, churn some old-fashioned ice cream, and participate in a Pinwheel Parade.
Baseball and Fireworks
If powdered wigs and pie isn’t your style, why not take in a minor league baseball game? Cheer on the Brooklyn Cyclones as our home team takes on the Williamsport Crosscutters from Pennsylvania. Everybody can run the bases and enjoy one of Coney Island’s great fireworks displays following the game.
Eagles and Americana
Not the team or the band, but the bird. You can’t get more patriotic than the bald eagle—something the folks at Prospect Park’s Audubon Center know well. Eagle as Icon examines the legendary bird and its identity as our nation’s emblem. This event includes a panel exhibit and nature craft.
Quills and Crafts
Over at the Lefferts Historic House in Prospect Park, kids can pick up a quill pen and Declare Independence by signing their names (good penmanship not necessary) on a reproduction of the Declaration of Independence before making a triangular hat reminiscent of our Founding Fathers.
