When scheduling back-to-school doctors’ appointments for your children, don’t forget to schedule a scoliosis screening. ChiroMom, a Bellmore chiropractor, is offering free scoliosis screenings for kids all summer.
The chiropractor’s office may not seem a likely place for a child to frequent, but Dana Walters, D.C., of ChiroMom says that chiropractic care is incredibly important for children as well as adults. For that reason, Dr. Walters is offering free pediatric screenings for scoliosis and other back issues for back-to-school exams all summer. The practice, located in Bellmore, is a holistic family chiropractic center, treating everyone from newborns to grandparents.
Dr. Walters stresses the importance of chiropractic care for children, even if they are not complaining of back pain at the moment. “When people start having back issues it’s not something that just started last week,” Dr. Walters says. “It’s been building for their whole life. It’s important for children to have their spines evaluated, just like they go to the dentist for a dental checkup and a cleaning.”
Children put stress on their backs and spines because they are so active—running, playing sports, climbing on playgrounds—and this stress can build up over time. Additionally, Dr. Walters believes the need for chiropractic care has skyrocketed because of children’s use of technology. “[Children] are constantly using that forward head posture, bending their head down, looking forward. This is really detrimental for their spines, especially as they’re growing,” she says.
ChiroMom offers a holistic approach to chiropractic care. Alongside general chiropractic care, the practice offers massage therapy, lifestyle modification, and other services. “We try to help the whole body function better,” Dr. Walters says. “We focus on what’s causing the issue rather than just treating the symptoms. I believe chiropractic care is for everybody, including children.”
