Chuck the groundhog may have predicted an early spring, but it feels like winter is here to stay – especially for those of us suffering from dry, itchy skin. According to New York City dermatologist Dr. Debra Jaliman, we can thank the season’s brisk and windy weather for our skin’s winter woes. Colder temperatures, low humidity levels and overheated apartments suck moisture from skin, leaving it itchy, flaky and in need of some extra TLC.—
We’ve pulled together some of Dr. Jaliman’s top tips for preventing dry skin this winter:
Restore Air’s Moisture: Invest in a humidifier to maintain indoor moisture levels at home. For a low-tech solution, try placing a pot of water on the windowsill. The water will evaporate, adding valuable moisture to dry air.
Shower Smart: Heat pulls oil out of the skin, so skip hot showers in the winter and wash with warm water instead. If you must have a hot shower, keep it short.
Use the Right Soap: Avoid antibacterial or fragranced soaps, which can deplete skin of the natural oils needed to keep it soft and hydrated. Instead opt for a moisturizing body wash with “fatty” ingredients and essential oils, such as new Aveeno Positively Nourishing Hydrating Body Wash ($6.99). Packed with shea butter, the lathering wash replenishes moisture for softer skin without leaving behind a heavy residue.
For an all-natural cleanser, try Tom’s of Main Natural Body Wash Unscented ($6.79)%uFFFD, which contains emollient glycerin and soothing coconut and palm oils. If skin is extra sensitive – even in warm weather – pick up Mustela’s Stelaprotect Cleansing Foam ($15.99). Gentle enough for newborns, the foaming wash contains super gentle surfactants powerful enough to clean delicate adult skin, too.
Moisturize After Washing: Post shower, pat skin dry and immediately moisturize skin from head to toe. Apply moisturizer after washing hands throughout the day, too.
Brush Away Flakes: Gently exfoliate in the shower once a week to remove dry flakes and allow hydrating ingredients from cleansers and moisturizers to penetrate skin.
Cover Up: Avoid exposing skin to winter’s harsh elements. Wear gloves and scarves to cover up delicate skin while outdoors for extended periods.
