You’ve been spending the last few months strolling around
Central Park, taking the kids to your favorite neighborhood ice cream spot (like these) and
rounding up the crew for weekend getaways to the beach. Though the new school
year and cooler temperatures are seriously within reach, there’s still time
for a few more days of sunshine-inspired fun! Happy Labor Day to you all. —
Kick off the weekend with Brooklyn’s Second Annual Unicycle
Festival
on Governors Island. During this FREE event, some of the city’s most talented
unicyclists will take a 13-mile ride, crossing the Brooklyn Bridge through
Coney Island. After the Friday night fireworks, your family can partake in games,
exhibitions and relays throughout the weekend.
A festival of different sorts is going on in Staten Island
this weekend—the Historic Richmond County Fair. This three-day event (Saturday-Monday) includes amusement park rides, contests
and games, a BMX stunt show and even pig races. Plus, we hear there will be pie.
Though Labor Day is not a holiday known for its parading,
there’s one kicking off early Saturday morning in Brooklyn. The West- Indian
American Junior Carnival
features bright colors, music and dance that the whole family can enjoy. Totally kid-friendly. Totally fun.
If the sky gets a bit cloudy on Saturday, head to Lincoln
Center for a performance by Mario the Magician.
Kids and parents alike will be mystified by clever, intricate tricks that go
far beyond the “pick a card, any card” fare. Children will be encouraged to explore
their own creativity, as Mario specializes in magic shows for tots.
On Sunday, the whole family can participate in a day of
outdoor fun and cooking during Mario Batali’s Edible Garden at the New York Botanical Gardens. Hunt for ingredients in the garden before
joining cooking demonstrations featuring kid-friendly recipes. You’ll get a
chance to sample these delicious dishes before exploring the rest of the beauty that the 250-acre grounds have to offer.
Families with kids ages 5-12 are invited to the Metropolitan
Museum of Art this Labor Day for Holiday Monday. Enjoy the quiet of the normally-closed museum, where children can explore the
exhibits, participate in discussions and take part in projects created
especially for them.
