Weekend Planner: March 31-April 6

Looks like it’s shaping up to be a weekend full of flowers and fairy tales!

This weekend marks the beginning of Hanami, the Japanese cultural
tradition of watching the cherry blossom season unfold, at the Brooklyn
Botanic Garden. Using the web exhibit "Cherry Watch," families can track
blossoms in real time and learn about each of the 42 species blossoming
at the garden. The season will culminate in the celebrated festival
Sakura Matsuri, with music, food, activities and an abundance of
fragrant pink blossoms!—

It’s also the official start of gardening season at the New York
Botanical Garden
, where kids can help get the Ruth Rea Howell Family
Garden ready for spring by planting seeds, making compost and digging
for worms.

Plus, on Saturday, kids can glean inspiration from Isa Genzken’s sculpture "Rose II (2007)" and Shirana Shahbazi’s site-specific floral wallpaper before creating their own bunches of flowers at the New Museum’s Free First Saturdays For Families workshop.

Also on Saturday, kids can join the other princes and princesses at the JCC for a Moey’s Music Party celebrating make-believe! Goldilocks, The Big Bad Wolf, The Little Mermaid and more storybook characters will be in attendance at this fairy tale-themed concert and costume party.

And speaking of fairy tales, Galli Theater has opened a new location at
the South Street Seaport, where families will now be able to catch
imaginative interpretations of "Cinderella" (playing now), "Princess
Labam," "Little Red Riding Hood," "Rapunzel" and "The Little Mermaid!"

We’re also excited to witness the grand opening of "Harry Potter: The Exhibition" at the Discovery Times Square Exposition (psst: there’s a sneak preview this weekend!); to hear author Maira Kalman read from her children’s books at The Jewish Museum; and to rock out with Norman Rockwell at the Brooklyn Museum’s Free First Saturday.
