Weekend Planner: Fun Family Events in NYC (February 6-8)

The weekend forecast predicts more snow, but for those who’d like to stay dry and warm the calendar is full of wonderful indoor activities. Take in the best in children’s film at the BAMKids Film Festival; see the Enlace S.C. Troupe drum infectious beats during their “STOMP”-like show, “Cambuyón;” or marvel at the grace of the New York Theatre ballet during their performance of “Cinderella.” And of course, don’t forget about New York Family’s Camp Fairs, happening in Manhattan and Brooklyn on Saturday and Sunday.

"From Here to There" at the Brooklyn Children's Museum
Take a trip to the Brooklyn Children’s Museum for the opening of its newest exhibit, “From Here to There.” Learn about the laws of motion, gravity, and friction through sailboat experiments, wind speed demos, and a hovercraft ride. (Opens Friday)
Cambuyón at the New Victory Theater
Like a Spanish version of "STOMP," in "Cambuyón" the performers of the Enlace S.C. troupe make music on everything from wooden crates to a tiny matchbox. Hailing from Barcelona and the Canary Islands, this energetic ensemble fuses hip hop, drumming, and body percussion to create unique rhythms revealing African, Spanish, Irish, and American influences. Recommended for ages 6 and up.(Opens Friday)
New York Family Camp Fairs- Brooklyn & Manhattan
This weekend the city's largest Camp Fairs will be in Brooklyn and Manhattan. The Camp Fairs are free and child-friendly, allowing parents and children (ages three to teen) the opportunity to chat with lots of Camp Directors (of day camps and sleepaway camps) in one convenient setting! BAMKids Film Festival 2015 at BAM
The BAMkids Film Festival is back for its 17th year! This weekend, the fest will screen 74 films from 30 countries, including a selection of short films plus the feature film “On the Way to School,” a documentary about the challenges that four children face when traveling to school. After the screenings, children can stop by the café for balloon-making, animation workshops, magic shows, face-painting, food, and much more. (Saturday-Sunday)
Josh and the Jamtones at Symphony Space
Come to Symphony Space to jam with this “interactive dance party kids band” hailing from Boston. Josh and the Jamtones’ sound has been compared to a mash-up of Bob Marley, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, and Jack Johnson. (Saturday)
New York Theatre Ballet: "Cinderella" at Florence Gould Hall
Ages 3 and up will have a ball at the New York Theatre Ballet’s production of “Cinderella” this Saturday and Sunday. Choreographed by Donald Mahler and featuring the costumes by Sylvia Taalson Nolan, this one-hour ballet is the perfect length for little ones. They will especially enjoy the dancing clock! (Saturday-Sunday)
"Things That Go Bang!" at the Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College
Explore the percussion family at “Things That Go Bang!” the first performance in the Little Orchestra Society’s LolliPops Spring Concert Series. Featuring the New York Percussion Group as a guest artist, conductor James Judd will guide the audience on a rhythmic journey. Clap your hands and stop your feet to pieces by composers Gershwin, Bizet, and Tchaikovsky. (Saturday-Sunday)
Carnegie Kids: The Itty Biddies
Catch The Itty Biddies live in concert at Carnegie Hall. The all-female band’s blend of folk and pop music makes the group a hit with kids and parents alike. The ladies will perform tunes from their latest children’s album, “Hello Hello Hello!” including “Safari,” “Jump Around,” and “Move Your Body.” This event is free, but reservations are required.
Family Concert: "Who is Billie Holiday?" at Jazz at Lincoln Center
This family concert will introduce young audiences to the distinct sound of Billie Holiday, whose unique contributions to the blues also influenced jazz and popular music in the 20th century. As part of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Billie Holiday Festival, this musical celebration of Holiday will feature acclaimed pianist Aaron Diehl and vocalist Charenee Wade, who will commemorate not only Holiday’s music, but also her status as a cultural icon.
