Weekend Planner: August 17-19

Story Pirates

We only have a few weeks left of summer, which means it’s really time to get out and about while you still can. There’s something for everyone this weekend with a massive kite festival, charitable ice cream tastings, a traveling exhibit of glow-in-the-dark creatures, student-written musicals, and more.

FRIDAY

Have you heard? Capoeira is the next big thing in martial arts, and the Global Carnival & Capoeira Adventures at McCarren Park will be pairing it with Brazilian music, dancing, and other outdoor fun. See why it’s all the rage.

SATURDAY

Tear up the summer sky at Riverside Park’s FlyNY Kite Festival, where you’ll be able to make your own kite like a pro. Let’s fly!

For kids, by kids: Story Pirates, the hilarious children’s troupe that transforms student-written stories into professional acts, is bringing two mini-musicals to El Museo del Barrio. Here’s what’s to love.

Squeeze in another summer festival while you still can. You’ll find it all at Harlem Week’s Summer in the City, a 60,000-person celebration of exotic cuisine, crafts, music and dance acts, and more. Woohoo!

Fill up your Saturday with food tastings, a Double Dutch performance, and the best of local shopping in Prospect Heights. More highlights here.

SATURDAY-SUNDAY

Ever wonder what comes alive when the sun goes down? A traveling exhibit at Liberty Science Center will introduce you to glowing green scorpions, super stealthy owls, and other creatures of the night. Be brave, friends.

Flapper fashion, Charleston dancing, vintage cars, and tug-o-wars harken back to a festive past era at the Jazz Age Lawn Party on Governors Island. Enjoy the spectacle!

SUNDAY

Those who prefer behind-the-scenes magic to the public limelight can zip over to CMOM and design their very own miniature Broadway set. Get creative!

Calling all aviation geeks: It’s Air Force Week at The Intrepid. Say thanks to our airborne heroes by cheering on their musical and drill performances and checking out the Supercar and Command Center exhibits. Get the scoop here.

End the weekend on a sweet note at Ice Cream Sunday, where a ticket for eight gourmet tastings helps the New Amsterdam Market in the Financial District support our favorite local vendors. Satiate your tummy and your heart.
