Weekend Planner: August 10-12

"Blown Away by Poetry" at FringeNYC

Prepare yourself for a magical weekend! The next few days is all about inspired circus acts, close encounters with wildlife, and great big festivals dedicated to food, music, and the arts.

FRIDAY-SATURDAY

The biggest arts event of the year–and in the nation–is here with citywide puppet mystery adventures, inspiring superhero musicals, and more. Get the FringeNYC scoop here.

It’s closing weekend for the American Museum of Natural History’s “Beyond Planet Earth,” an exhibition that celebrates NASA’s Mars landing and life beyond our little globe. Here’s what to look for there.

SATURDAY

Go dancing in the streets at Battery Park City’s Greek Family Dance, where you’ll boogie to traditional instruments like the kavali and tsambouna. Jump in!

NYC families are no strangers to juggling, tumbling, and other acrobatic fun. But the kicker to Fresh Ground Pepper’s Eco Circus in Stuyvesant Cove Park? It’s all solar-powered.

SATURDAY-SUNDAY

Even more theater fun abounds at the Children’s Shakespeare Festival with a comedy classic at the West Side Community Garden. Colorful outfits, energetic duels, and other surprises to classic plays–find it all here.

If you believe in magic, you’ll love Echoes of Enchantment’s mysterious napkin tug-of-war at Ray Arias Theatres. Not a believer? This might change your mind.

You don’t need a time machine to travel back to the 19th century. But it’s not just cannon demonstrations and fortress designing on Governors Island’s Civil War Weekend. See for yourself.

SUNDAY

Keep defying the space-time continuum on a retired subway train and vintage bus Nostalgia Ride to the Rockaways, the NYC beach and greenery destination of the summer. Hop on!

Calling all bird lovers: Experience a cruise like no other with an Audubon water taxi to Brothers Island, featuring herons and other majestic creatures. Don’t miss your chance!

The nature fun continues at Wave Hill, where you can get up close and personal with beautiful butterflies under the guidance of expert naturalists. Let’s go!

Get a taste of Queens at this weekend’s  Astoria Park Shore Fest of free tastings, juggling lessons, and day-long performances. Fill up on details here.

End it all with a bang at SummerStage’s Uptown Family Day at Marcus Garvey Park. What more can you ask for than a revolutionary dance party, Jazz for Young People, a b-ball movie, and a live DJ? A lot!
