An after-school coding program, theCoderSchool, recently opened a location in Syosset for children ages 7-18. Drop-off classes in coding and programming for kids of all skill levels take place weekly after school at theCoderSchool Syosset, which opened Oct. 14.
The after-school coding program was founded in Palo Alto, California and is a proud founding member of the International Alliance of Youth Coding Educators. It has locations across the country, but the new Syosset location is the first in New York.
“We decided to place our first site in Syosset because of the incredible energy and focus that the district has on educating their students,” says Noreen Kazi, owner and general manager.
At theCoderSchool Syosset, kids learn to code and program year-round within an environment that strives to be fun and collaborative. It offers coding classes at various levels throughout the year, as well as coding camps during summer and school breaks.
Students at theCoderSchool Syosset can learn from and work with Code Coaches® who check in with parents on a weekly basis to update them on their child’s progress. Students start with basic code languages and move up based on their interests. Two students work with one Code Coach to ensure individualized attention. There is a comfortable area for parents to wait, but it’s not necessary, Kazi says.
The goal of theCoderSchool is to empower and inspire kids through code and ultimately, to build a community of thinkers, creators, and innovators. Through theCoderSchool, kids have a chance to engage with technology in a meaningful way, according to Kazi.
“We hope to also use this program to help students build concrete and advanced critical thinking skills as coding is really a wonderful foundation to help students break down and think through complex and advanced problems, piece by piece,” she says.
In Syosset theCoderSchool will host a monthly Seeker Series, free of charge to the community, where executives from technology companies will Skype in to offer advice on careers in technology to the students.
