In the New York Theatre
Ballet’s coming-to-you-soon production of The Alice-in-Wonderland Follies (February
10-12), Alice doesn’t tumble down your typical rabbit
hole. Instead, she pirouettes and leaps into a vaudeville-esque wonderland—as
only choreographer Keith Michael can envision it. —
Inspired by Lewis Carroll’s infamous Alice’s
Adventures in Wonderland and Through
the Looking Glass, NYTB’s The Alice-in-Wonderland
Follies is set at the pinnacle of vaudeville entertainment in 1915 on the
stage of New York
City’s Palace
Theater. It incorporates elements of humor, a “confection of high brow and low
brow music” and a colorful array of dance styles—ranging in everything from
African juba to acrobatics, Irish step dancing, ballroom, comedic interludes
and, of course, a splash of classical ballet. Through a series of vignettes,
Michael brings to life all of Carroll’s classic characters you know and love,
including Alice, the White Rabbit, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, the Cheshire
Cat, The Red Queen and more.
With imaginative sets by Gillian Bradshaw-Smith, vibrant costumes by the
Metropolitan Opera’s resident designer Sylvia Taalsohn Nolan and Keith Michael’s
fun, inventive choreography, the hour-long production is the perfect way to
introduce your young child to the realm of ballet. Plus, we think the show’s
use of dance and humor will inspire the “inner child” in your entire family!
Great for ages 3-8. Performances are February
10-12 at Florence Gould Hall. Tickets are $31/kids and $36/adults and can be
purchased here, through Ticketmaster (800-982-2787) or at the NYTB box
