Carole Roman of Syosset, NY recently released a children’s book that takes young readers on a pirate adventure while teaching responsibility and good decision-making.
Carole Roman*, an educator-turned-businesswoman and grandmother of two who lives in Syosset, NY, on Long Island, released a children’s picture book in April: Captain No Beard: An Imaginary Tale of a Pirate’s Life. The story follows two children who use their imaginations to turn a bed into a pirate ship and a quiet room into the roaring seas.
When Alexander and his cousin Hallie get together, their imaginations run wild. On this particular day, they find themselves on a pirate ship with Alexander in charge as Captain No Beard, and Hallie serves as his first mate. With stuffed animals for a crew, the children set sail in search of pirate treasures. The ship soon faces a strange sail on the horizon and a terrible storm. Eventually, the pirates encounter a mermaid—Alexander’s mom—who rewards them with some treasure (cookies) and reminds them to clean up the room before dinner.
“Alexander chooses to be Captain No Beard and learns that by picking the major role, he accepts that there will be responsibility that comes with being the leader,” Roman says. “He makes sure that each sailor takes care of his chores, and when danger presents itself, he is the one that must save his cousin. When he makes a decision, he must benefit the entire group.”
Intended to entertain and appeal to young readers, the book seeks to demonstrate the responsibilities that come with being a leader, even on an imaginary voyage. The book also features original, full-color illustrations depicting Alexander, Hallie, the pirate crew, and each challenge they encounter on their adventure
