During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, there are many ways to show your support for breast cancer research and the work being done toward finding a cure, from donning pink to joining a fundraising walk or run like the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in Manhattan. And if you’re more of a shopper than a walker, that works too. Throughout October, many businesses donate a portion of their proceeds to the cause. Below are three new products that donate to various organizations supporting breast cancer research and awareness, plus one NYC special.
Sweet Songs of Support
Over the Moon: The Broadway Lullaby Project is a combined music and book release that brings together some of the biggest names in Broadway along with world-class jazz musicians, famed composers and lyricists, and respected illustrators to put a fresh spin on the classic lullaby. The project incorporates a 2-CD, 26-song album ($14.99); a lavishly illustrated hardcover book of 17 songs from the album ($18.95); a corresponding e-book encompassing the entire collection ($8.99); and a documentary film and web series. The roster of contributing talent includes singers such as Tony-winner Audra McDonald and Brooklyn-born Vanessa Williams; musicians such as famed pianists Fred Hersch and Brad Mehldau; and dozens of esteemed composers and lyricists. The project’s book component also features a distinctive cover illustration by fabled cartoonist/playwright Jules Feiffer, along with a foreword written by stage and screen legend Julie Andrews and her daughter Emma Walton Hamilton. Go Pink for Inner Peace
Gaiam, an eco-friendly company that supports healthy lifestyles and alternative healthcare, introduced a new Pink Ribbon Yoga Mat ($21.98) this fall that is specially designed by Yogi Colleen Saidman, wife of yoga guru Rodney Yee. This lightweight and durable three-millimeter mat features a unique, pink ribbon-inspired design that will add a splash of color to your yoga workout. It comes with a yoga workout download, and $1 from the sale of each mat will be donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
New York City Special
The New Jersey-based Sweet Sally’s Bakeshop offers several NYC specialty desserts, including Big Al’s Black and Whites. These cake-like cookies, topped with rich chocolate and vanilla icing, are named after a “true blue New Yorker” — owner Sally Minier’s father Al. “Wherever we went, Dad and I would sample black and whites and would critique each one’s icing, cake consistency, overall taste, and workmanship,” Minier writes on her site. In October, Sweet Sally’s offers a twist on the classic cookie: Minier’s Pink and Whites ($27 for 12 cookies in a keepsake gift tin) celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and a portion of their sales is donated to Susan G. Komen For The Cure.
