St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Academy aims to provide a rigorous education and religious formation to its students, developing the mind, body, and spirit. The academy fulfills this commitment by offering a variety of programs within the daily curriculum. In addition to four programs the school introduced for the fall 2013 school year, the academy will begin piloting two new programs within the coming weeks—a writing program for fifth through eighth grades and an in-class fitness program.
Principal Robert DiNardo says the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn asked St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Academy to pilot a writing program through CTB/McGraw-Hill for fifth- through eighth-graders. The new program, Writing Roadmap, provides an effective way for students to practice and improve their writing skills and allows teachers to track students’ writing proficiency.
The school’s pre-K and kindergarten classes are piloting the in-class fitness program, Adventure to Fitness. The program helps kids get active through fun, adventure themed videos that are approximately 3 minutes long. Videos are sent to the teachers and are displayed on the classroom’s smart board. DiNardo says that if the program is successful, they will consider expanding it to older grades.
St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Academy offers full- and half-day programs for pre-kindergarten (ages 3-4), a full-day kindergarten, and first through eighth grades.
