Posey School of Dance, located in Northport, now offers a dance intensive class for tweens and a dance class for preschoolers. The preteen dance program is a summer dance program, while the preschool program runs year-round.
Posey School of Dance in Northport is what Kimberly Wager, administrative manager, calls an “education-based school.” The school does not stress recitals or performances, but rather focuses on expression and creativity. This summer, Posey School will offer a mini dance intensive for preteens and Posey Preschool for younger children.
The mini intensive is geared toward children ages 7-12, an age group that Wager says is often forgotten in dance programs. Instead of grouping preteens in with teen classes, which Wager says is common in the dance world, Posey School created an intensive specifically for this age group. “They’re not babies anymore, but they’re not really ready for advanced professional dance intensives, so we created this for them,” Wager says.
The intensive, which runs July 6-Aug. 14, on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 3-6pm, includes a variety dance types, including ballet, modern, contemporary, jazz, tap, and hip-hop, as well as composition and choreography. The intensive is open to all skill levels, and is not audition based. “This is a chance for the novice learner to come in and try out new styles of dance.” Wager says. “We feel this is a really special age group and want them to be doing age appropriate [dancing].”
Along with this new mini intensive, Posey School also caters to younger children with its Posey Preschool. Every weekday from 9am-12pm, even in the summer, Posey Preschool combines dance and visual arts to create an active learning environment for children ages 3-7. “We believe in creating and exploring and movement and imagination,” Wager says. With a teacher from The Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan, children learn about classical artists—Van Gogh, Picasso, and Monet—and combine their new knowledge with dance.
Registration is now open for summer and fall classes, including preschool.
