Upper East Side Sewing Studio Offering New Classes

Pins and Needles, a sewing and crafting boutique and studio, is now offering children ages 7-14 years old sewing classes Mon-Fri after school and on Saturdays. Classes focus on hand and machine sewing and fashion illustration, says owner Rachel Low.

“We teach the skill of sewing but it is so far beyond that” Low says. “It [sewing] teaches self expression and they also learn about the process.”

Classes are taught on a semester basis, with three semesters a year running for 9-14 weeks. Students take one 75-90 minute class per week and classes are capped at seven students with two teachers per class.

“I keep classes intentionally small because it’s really important for that 1 on 1 attention,” Low says.

Students get to pick the fabric from the retail space next door to the studio and do their own designing and styling for a well-rounded experience, Low says.

Next month, Low will offer an art of fashion class designed for students interested in going deeper into fashion illustration and mood boards. She says students will really go through the process a designer goes through when making a collection.

There are bi-monthly open houses at the studio for potential students and their parents to come in and see the space, student projects, and have a 30 minutes clinic on the sewing machine.
