“Ballerina Swan”
Theater 3
Various times
Making Books Sing invites kids ages 3 through 8 to their new production of “Ballerina Swan.” Based on the children’s novel of the same name by former NYC Ballet prima ballerina Allegra Kent, this musical puppet performance follows Sophie, a Central Park swan who yearns to dance in Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake. Find out if her dream comes true during this 50-minute show. Runs Wednesdays through Sundays until November 24. Tickets start at $25.
Neighborhood Toy Store Day
Various toy stores across Manhattan
Various times
Stop by one of several toy store locations throughout the city in honor of Neighborhood Toy Store Day, an initiative that encourages parents to shop at their local independent toy stores for their holiday gifts. Purchasing toys through your neighborhood toy shop ensures that your children snag high-quality (sometimes even handmade) toys at reasonable prices, not to mentions how you’ll be supporting local businesses. To celebrate Neighborhood Toy Day, local faves like Stationary & Toy INC., Kidding Around, and Dinosaur Hill will be featuring clowns, giveaways, arts and crafts, glitter tattoo stations, and goody bags. Activities are free.
“The Very Hungry Caterpillar And Other Eric Carle Favourites”
The NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts
11am and 2pm
The beloved stories of children’s author Eric Carle will come alive with larger-than-life puppets during this family-friendly performance from The Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia. Through stories such as “The Very Hungry Caterpillar,” “Little Cloud,” and “The Mixed Up Chameleon,” ages 2 and up will learn the importance of being comfortable with oneself and embracing their inner beauty. Arrive an hour prior to the show for a pre-concert arts & crafts activity–and stick around afterward for a Q&A with the cast! Tickets start at $22.
Saturday, November 9-Sunday, November 10
Little Orchestra Society: Carnival of the Animals
The Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College
Various times
Guest Conductor David Alan Miller and his orchestra will be joined onstage by children’s book author and illustrator Peter H. Reynolds to bring to life composer Camille Saint-Saëns’ 14-movement suite, Carnival of the Animals.
