Construction is close to starting on the site of the future Bronx Children’s Museum, located at Mill Pond Park at the Bronx Terminal Market Powerhouse right along the Harlem River, according to The Riverdale Press. Bronx families and those close by, will soon be able to experience an expansive array of music, science, and the arts.
Children and families will have access to a 12,800-square-foot museum, thanks to the NYC Department of Design and Construction. The Department will submit their proposals for a design for the museum within the next few days. The design will be what O’Neill McVoy Architects are calling “a marvelous adventure space” for children to learn, explore, and expand their minds.
The museum was formerly housed in a converted school bus, traveling to Bronx schools and community events in order to reach thousands of children. With the new plans, many more children will be able to experience the offerings of the museum and gain a greater understanding and admiration of the arts and sciences, leading to a lifetime of inspiration.
In addition to the $10 million put toward the museum by elected officials and non-profits, $3.5 million has been put towards the construction of the museum thanks to the Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.’s allocation of the funding. “For many kids, it is in places such as The Bronx Children’s Museum where they first attain their appreciation for the arts,” Diaz Jr. told reporters.
Are you excited to see a new children’s museum opening in the Bronx? Do you think it will be a start to more enriching facilities for people in the community? Do you plan to pay a visit once it opens?
